Joanna Gilbert

Joanna Gilbert is best known for her colourful, large scale and visceral abstract paintings. She shares a message of mental wellness through her art and encourages people to live a life from a place of authenticity.

Born in India and raised in London, Gilbert has always been a prolific painter. She began painting professionally ten years ago and has recently completed a Masters in fine art at The Chelsea College of Arts, which was pivotal to the direction her art practice has taken.

Gilbert approaches painting in a spontaneous way that is not predetermined. She completes paintings in a single uninterrupted session as she navigates the flow of inspiration.

She often works in diptych formation with the two canvasses pushed right up close to each other, creating one larger piece. At some point during the session, she then separates them but the connection between the two remains. Working on two paintings also prevents her from over thinking and over working the composition. It affords her freedom to create and allows each piece to breathe.

When it comes to a composition, there are ‘no wrong turns’ and every mark she makes and brushstroke that is laid is there for a reason. The art created is interwoven with a rich perspective of life and how we are all part of something bigger than us.

She is represented internationally through several galleries and is collected by private individuals as well as corporate collections in UK and Europe.
