Neko Neko

Neko Neko is a contemporary artist  based in London. She honed her artistic craft for several years in Japan focusing on local traditions and artistry.

In the mountains of Echigo – the snow country – she trained in silk painting, calligraphy, and artisan paper making. Alongside these practices, Neko Neko immersed herself in kimono culture and the Japanese tea ceremony, spending long hours at the local temple. The tranquillity both of the art training itself and the surrounding nature was the perfect environment to foster her need for solitude in order to create.
After several years in the mountains, Neko Neko moved to Tokyo to focus on ink and acrylic works, influenced by shodō and adding a sense of theatre to her paintings.
Curiously, her works dance between controlled pieces that rely on skilled brushwork and trance-like moves, and richly playful pieces where colour relations become the focus amid a powerful network of black strokes.
Her abstract works draw a connection between the human body and the natural world, in particular, the visceral power of the oceans and the vast waves of emotion experienced by the body.
Neko Neko’s work is held in many important art collection internationally, notably in Denmark, Finland, Japan, the US and the UK.
