Phil Shakespeare lives and works in London creating fabric patchwork art, inspired by the bold geometric forms, light and shadows of the built environment.
Often depicting concrete brutalist buildings from celebrated architects like Erno Goldfinger, each unique piece of work is created using specific elements of construction for inspiration. Many of Phil’s works explicitly mirror buildings such as the Trellick and Balfron towers, as well as the extensive brutalist schemes across London’s Southbank.
After initially sketching, then mapping the work on a computer, the work is split into panels which are then cut from linen fabric to create a patchwork using a sewing machine. These compositions are then stretched over canvas to produce his finished abstract pieces in handmade frames.
Originally from Staffordshire, Phil studied Design and Art Direction at Manchester Metropolitan University and moved to London 18 years ago. Working as a graphic designer, and also in upholstery, he has a love of architecture and interior design; all of which influence his work. His artwork is collected across the UK and he has most recently exhibited at the Other Art Fair in March 2025.
